Volunteer Tavern
Proper Old Market boozer where locals actually drink and the atmosphere feels genuinely lived-in rather than contrived.

You'll find this place tucked into Old Market's grittier edges, where the gentrification hasn't quite reached yet. The Volunteer feels like what Bristol pubs used to be before they all started serving small plates and craft IPAs at London prices. Don't get me wrong – the beer's decent and they know how to pour a proper pint – but it's the crowd that makes it. You get everyone from tattooed creatives to old-school Bristolians who've been coming here for decades, all mixing together without the forced quirkiness you find elsewhere. The interior's got that worn-in comfort that only comes from years of genuine use, with dark wood that's seen plenty of stories and corners perfect for settling in with mates.
