The Standing Order - JD Wetherspoon
Grand Georgian banking hall transformed into Edinburgh's most spectacular 'Spoons, with soaring ceilings and surprisingly good value.

You walk into what feels like a financial cathedral – all marble columns and ornate ceiling work that harks back to this building's days as the British Linen Bank. The sheer scale of the space is breathtaking, with chandeliers hanging from a coffered ceiling that most restaurants could only dream of. Yes, it's a Wetherspoons, but it's arguably the most architecturally stunning one in Scotland.
The usual 'Spoons formula applies: proper cheap pints, reliable fish and chips, and breakfast served until noon. What sets The Standing Order apart is the setting – you're drinking your £3.50 pint surrounded by period features that would make the Assembly Rooms jealous. Right on George Street, it's perfectly placed for pre-theatre drinks or post-shopping pints, and the staff keep things moving despite the crowds.
