You descend into this South Bridge basement knowing you're in for a proper night. The stone-walled cavern has been hosting live music since the dawn of time (or at least feels like it), and the acoustic setup means you're practically breathing the same air as whoever's wielding the guitar that evening. The crowd is a brilliant mix of local musos, students who've discovered somewhere that won't bankrupt them, and tourists who've stumbled upon something genuinely decent rather than another tartan-draped tourist trap. The drinks are reasonably priced for the Old Town, the atmosphere gets properly buzzing once the bands kick off, and you'll often find yourself staying far later than intended. It's not trying to be flash or Instagram-worthy – just a proper music venue that happens to serve decent pints in atmospheric surroundings that feel authentically Edinburgh.
