The café upstairs from M&S's Westgate Street store does proper coffee and surprisingly decent food without the department store stuffiness.

You know that moment when you're dragging yourself around Westgate Street with a million errands and suddenly realise you're properly knackered? The café above M&S sorts you right out. Forget whatever preconceptions you have about department store dining – this place actually knows what it's doing with coffee, and their sandwiches and cakes are miles better than the usual high street offerings.
The space feels more like a proper café than corporate canteen, with decent natural light filtering through those big windows overlooking the street below. Staff are genuinely friendly rather than going through the motions, and you can actually have a conversation without shouting over terrible music. At around £6-8 for lunch with a drink, it's fair value for the town centre, and infinitely more pleasant than cramming into Costa with half of Ipswich.
