The Bridge Tavern
Victorian riverside pub with proper ales, decent grub, and some of the best views in the city centre from its upstairs windows.
historiccosyrelaxedrusticpub
Perched on the steep cobbles of Akenside Hill, you'll find this handsome Victorian boozer that's managed to keep its soul intact while the city centre churns around it. The ground floor feels properly pubby – all dark wood and worn brass – but head upstairs and you'll catch glimpses of the Tyne through tall windows that make you remember why people actually live here.
The ale selection is thoughtful without being showy, and the kitchen turns out solid pub classics that won't disappoint after a few pints. It's the sort of place where you pop in for one and somehow end up closing the joint, chatting to strangers about football or the state of the bridges. Weekends bring a decent crowd, but it never feels touristy – just a proper local that happens to occupy prime real estate.
