You'll smell the charcoal and spices before you even push through the door on Great Horton Road. The flames are proper here – none of that fake grill nonsense – and they know exactly how to handle a chicken. The piri piri sauce comes in levels from 'I'm new to this' mild right up to 'I've made a terrible mistake' extra hot, and the Portuguese lads behind the counter will gleefully watch you underestimate the heat. The chips are decent enough (skin-on, thank god), but you're really here for the chicken. Get the butterfly breast if you're being sensible, or go full commitment with the whole bird. Either way, you'll be licking your fingers and immediately planning your next visit. It's not fancy, but it's exactly what Great Horton needed.
