You wouldn't necessarily think to pop into M&S for a coffee break while trudging up Western Road with your shopping bags, but their café upstairs is actually a solid shout. The space feels more welcoming than your typical department store canteen, with proper barista-made coffee that doesn't taste like it's been sitting in a flask since opening time. The food goes beyond the usual pre-packed sandwiches too - their cakes are genuinely good (the lemon drizzle is particularly sound), and they do a decent breakfast if you're starting your day in Hove rather than heading straight into town. It's handy when you need a proper sit-down between errands, especially since parking on Western Road is less of a nightmare than trying to find a spot near the seafront.
