Sainsbury's

This compact Sainsbury's Local has surprisingly decent fresh bakery counter that puts most supermarket efforts to shame.

You wouldn't expect much from a supermarket bakery tucked into the New England Quarter, but this little Sainsbury's Local consistently delivers better baked goods than half the cafés charging twice the price. The in-store bakery counter turns out proper crusty bread daily, and their pastries actually taste like someone who cares made them. The croissants are flaky enough to make a mess of your morning commute, and the sourdough has that proper tang you'd expect from somewhere more artisanal. Sure, it's still a supermarket, but when you need decent bread without trekking to the North Laine or paying Hove prices, this place does the job brilliantly. The staff know their stuff too – ask about what's coming out of the oven next.
