You'll find yourself wedged between undergraduates and locals on St Johns Street, the kind of place where the smell of butter and almonds hits you before you've even opened the door. Le Patissier does that rare thing of being genuinely good without the smugness—the éclairs are precisely what éclairs should be, the tarte au citron doesn't mess about with unnecessary flourishes, and their croissants have the kind of shatter you want at 8am. It's tight quarters and standing room only most days, but that's rather the point. This is the sort of café that keeps a neighbourhood ticking over properly.
