Market Tavern

You'll find yourself in one of those rare city centre pubs that manages to balance being both a proper local and a tourist-friendly spot without losing its soul. The Market Tavern sits pretty much dead centre on Market Place, making it the perfect spot for a pint after wandering around the Cathedral or before heading up to the castle. The Greene King setup means you know what you're getting drink-wise – solid, well-kept ales and the usual suspects – but the food punches above its weight for a chain pub. The menu's got all the classics done properly, and the staff actually seem to care about what they're serving. It gets properly busy on weekends when the students descend, but during the week it's got that perfect pub atmosphere where you can actually have a conversation.
