Jolly Judge
A proper old-school boozer tucked away on the Lawnmarket with low ceilings, creaky floors, and the kind of character money can't buy.

You'll find yourself ducking through a narrow close off the Lawnmarket, then descending into what feels like a time capsule. The Jolly Judge is all exposed stone, timber beams, and the sort of worn wooden furniture that's absorbed decades of Edinburgh chat. It's the kind of place where locals actually drink—not tourists performing the role of locals—and the regulars know every creak in the floorboards. The bar staff pull a decent pint, the whisky selection is proper, and there's proper food if you need it. Expect tight corners, low doorways (mind your head), and an atmosphere that's genuinely convivial without trying.
