The Elephant House
The birthplace of Harry Potter where JK Rowling penned early chapters, now a tourist pilgrimage site with decent coffee and elephant décor.

You'll spot the queue of Harry Potter fans clutching cameras before you even reach the door on George IV Bridge. Inside this cramped Old Town café, every surface bristles with elephant ornaments while tourists snap photos of the loo where a plaque marks JK Rowling's writing spot. The reality is rather more mundane than the myth suggests – decent enough coffee and cakes, but you're paying tourist prices for the privilege of sitting where the wizarding world allegedly began.
The back room offers proper views over Greyfriars Kirkyard, which explains why Rowling found inspiration here. Service can be brusque when they're swamped with Potter pilgrims, and finding a seat requires patience. Come early or late to avoid the worst crowds, though honestly, you'd get better coffee and atmosphere at dozens of other spots around the Royal Mile.
