The Ensign Ewart

You're climbing up the Lawnmarket, that steep stretch of the Royal Mile where the tourists thin out and things get properly Edinburgh, when you'll spot this place. The Ensign Ewart has the kind of gnarled, lived-in charm you can't manufacture—all dark wood, low ceilings and the sense that half of Edinburgh's ever worked behind or bellied up to this bar. It's the sort of pub where you can nurse a proper pint and actually hear yourself think, even when it's rammed. The beer selection is thoughtful without being showy, the food's straightforward and honest, and there's genuine craic among the regulars.
