Walk into Ayubowan and you're getting Sri Lankan home cooking, not some watered-down approximation. Carlton Place isn't the flashiest stretch of town, but that's part of the charm—this place doesn't need the hype. The lamprais is genuinely excellent, built with proper technique, and their devilled preparations (the fish especially) pack actual heat without being show-offy about it. Kottu roti comes out hot and properly textured, the kind of thing that makes you understand why people queue for it back in Colombo. Service is warm without being fussy, and the room has that unpretentious energy you want when you're properly hungry.
