Hexham Abbey

Medieval abbey dominating Beaumont Street with jaw-dropping stonework, gregorian chant, and 1,300 years of Northumbrian history crackling through its walls.

Walk up Beaumont Street towards the Abbey and you'll feel the building announce itself before you even reach the gates—all that sandstone and Gothic intention. Inside, the soaring nave catches you off guard every time. The choir stalls are genuinely magnificent, carved with the kind of detail that makes you realise medieval craftspeople were showing off. If you time it right, you'll catch the canons singing evensong, which transforms the whole space into something properly transcendent. Even if you're not remotely religious, the sense of time and purpose in here is impossible to ignore.
