The Gardener's Arms
Proper neighbourhood boozer on Cottingham Road that's nailed the balance between good grub and decent pints without any gastropub nonsense.

You'll find this brick-built beauty just off the Avenues, where Cottingham Road starts its journey towards the suburbs. It's the sort of pub that gets the fundamentals spot-on – decent Yorkshire ales on tap, hearty plates of food that don't cost the earth, and a crowd that's equal parts students from the nearby uni digs and locals who've been propping up the bar since the Blair years.
The kitchen turns out proper pub classics alongside a few modern touches, nothing fancy but everything done well. Sunday roasts here are particularly sound, and the fact they're open from 10am every day means you can nurse a pint and a proper breakfast when you're feeling a bit worse for wear. The beer garden's a proper sun trap when Hull's weather decides to behave itself.
