Institute of Contemporary Arts

Brutalist arts powerhouse on The Mall showing experimental film, theatre and visual art that actually challenges you rather than Instagram itself.

You're walking past the grand neoclassical facades of The Mall, then you descend into the ICA and suddenly you're in this raw, unflinching 1970s concrete bunker—and that's kind of the point. This place was founded on the radical idea that art should provoke and unsettle, not decorate your living room. You'll find cutting-edge cinema you won't see anywhere else, live performances that are genuinely risky, and visual exhibitions that genuinely make you think (or furiously disagree, which is fine). There's a proper cinema with two screens, a theatre space, and galleries spread across multiple levels. The bookshop is excellent—proper art and theory books, not just coffee table trinkets. The café serves decent coffee and cakes without trying too hard.
