You walk into what feels like a proper Victorian banking hall – because that's exactly what it used to be. The soaring ceilings, ornate cornicing, and original marble columns make this one of the more atmospheric Spoons in the East Midlands. Sure, it's still a Wetherspoons with all the usual suspects on tap and the same laminated menu, but the setting elevates everything.
The beer selection here is actually solid, with rotating guest ales that often include local breweries alongside the standard Greene King offerings. Staff know their stuff better than most chain pubs, and the food arrives hot and exactly as expected. It gets properly busy on Friday nights with a mix of students, office workers, and locals who appreciate decent prices in genuinely impressive surroundings.
