You'll feel the weight of nearly a thousand years when you duck through the low doorways into these rock-carved rooms. The cave-like chambers feel genuinely medieval, not theme park fake, and the uneven floors and dim lighting create an atmosphere that countless other 'historic' pubs try desperately to replicate. Yes, it's touristy, but locals still prop up the bar because the Greene King ales are well-kept and the setting is genuinely extraordinary.
The cursed galleon model hanging from the ceiling gets all the attention, but it's the quieter moments that make this place special – nursing a pint in the back caves while rain patters on Brewhouse Yard outside. Service can be patchy when coach parties descend, but time your visit right and you'll understand why this place has been pulling pints since crusaders allegedly stopped by on their way to Jerusalem.
