McCaig’s Tower & Battery Hill
Victorian folly with panoramic views over Oban Bay and the islands. Worth the climb for the perspective alone.
historicrelaxedquirkyhistorical landmark
You'll find yourself on Duncraggan Road heading uphill, past the Victorian villas, until the landscape opens up and suddenly there's this eccentric stone tower rising from Battery Hill like something from a fever dream. Built in 1897 as a labour of love (and considerable expense) by John Stuart McCaig, a local banker with more ambition than sense, it's an ornamental structure with zero practical purpose—which somehow makes it perfect. The views are genuinely spectacular: you're looking down at the ferry terminal, across to Mull and Kerrera, and out towards Lismore. On a clear day, you can see the Paps of Jura. Locals bring visitors here to properly disorient them.
