Vaults & Garden
Church-housed café with soaring stone arches, excellent coffee, and surprisingly good brunches in the city centre.

You'll find yourself doing a double-take as you step into what was once St Mary the Virgin's 14th-century crypt. The soaring stone arches and original medieval stonework create an atmosphere that's equal parts reverent and relaxed, whilst the gentle chatter of students and locals bounces off centuries-old walls.
The coffee here is proper good – they take their beans seriously and the baristas know what they're doing. The brunch menu punches well above its weight too, with dishes like their shakshuka and avocado on sourdough that'll sort you right out after a heavy night on Cowley Road. When the weather's decent, grab a spot in the garden out back – it's one of the few places in the city centre where you can actually hear yourself think. Service is cheerful without being overly keen, and the whole operation feels refreshingly unpretentious despite the stunning setting.
