The Draper's Arms - JD Wetherspoon

You know what you're getting with a Spoons, but this Cowgate stalwart does it better than most. The building itself has proper character – high ceilings and decent space that doesn't feel like you're drinking in a barn conversion gone wrong. The usual suspects are all here: cheap pints, curry club on a Thursday, and breakfast that'll sort you right out after a heavy night in the city centre. The staff actually seem to give a toss, which isn't always a given with the chain. Whether you're after a quick pint before catching the train or settling in for a proper session, it does the job without any pretence. The food's exactly what you'd expect – nothing fancy, but the fish and chips won't disappoint and the Sunday roast is decent enough for the price.
