You'll spot the queue before you see the sign – that's always a good indicator when you're wandering the cobbles of the Barbican. The nautical theme might feel a bit on-the-nose given the harbour location, but when the battered cod arrives golden and flaking, accompanied by chips that actually taste like potatoes, you'll forgive the maritime kitsch. This isn't trying to be fancy, and that's exactly why it works. The portions are generous without being obscene, the mushy peas are properly mushy, and they know their way around a piece of haddock. Yes, you'll be sharing the space with day-trippers clutching guidebooks, but plenty of Plymothians make the trek down here when they're craving fish and chips done right. The prices remain refreshingly reasonable despite the prime Barbican real estate.
