St Nicholas Bar & Grill

You're walking down Castle Street towards the castle itself when St Nicholas pulls you in—partly the Georgian frontage, mostly the smell of something good happening on the grill. It's housed in one of those gorgeous old Shrewsbury buildings that's actually medieval underneath, all exposed stone and proper character. The menu does classic British stuff done right: steaks that know what they're doing, fish when it's worth eating, and sides that aren't an afterthought. It's the kind of place where locals go for birthdays and work do's because it actually delivers, not because they're trying too hard.
