The Cowherds
Victorian pub on the Common with proper roasts, reliable ales, and enough space for Sunday lunch crowds without feeling like a barn.

You'd walk past this Vintage Inn if you weren't looking for it, which is probably why it works so well. Tucked onto the edge of Southampton Common, The Cowherds does that rare thing of being part of a chain whilst still feeling like somewhere you'd actually choose to drink. The Victorian building has proper bones – high ceilings, decent beer taps, and tables that aren't bolted to the floor.
The food leans into proper pub classics without trying to be clever about it. Sunday roasts arrive with Yorkshire puddings that actually rise, and the fish and chips come with chips thick enough to matter. It's the sort of place where you can bring your parents for lunch or settle in for a pint after walking the dog on the Common. Not groundbreaking, but reliable in a way that feels increasingly precious.
