Umi
Seriously good Japanese cooking on York Street that doesn't mess about. Fresh sashimi, proper ramen, and sushi that'll ruin you for supermarket versions.

Walk into Umi on a Friday night and you'll immediately get why locals queue here. The space is tight but never feels cramped—there's an energy to it, all dark wood and clean lines, the kind of place where you can actually watch the chefs work their magic. You're getting proper Japanese technique here: impeccably fresh fish, hand-rolled sushi that tastes like someone actually cares, and ramen broths that have clearly simmered for hours. The sort of neighbourhood spot that punches well above its weight without any of the pretension. York Street's gained a bit of a rep for decent food lately, and Umi's absolutely at the top of that tree.
