The Church Street supermarket's in-house bakery turns out surprisingly decent fresh bread, pastries and celebration cakes at fair prices.

You might not think to head to a supermarket for your baked goods, but the bakery counter at this Church Street Sainsbury's genuinely delivers. The smell of fresh bread hits you the moment you walk through the automatic doors, and their morning croissants are flaky enough to make you forget you're shopping for groceries. The birthday cake selection is particularly solid – proper buttercream, not that synthetic stuff – and at £8-12 for a decent-sized cake, it's half what you'd pay at some of the posh bakeries near the town centre.
What sets this place apart is the timing. Getting here early means warm pain au chocolat and fresh tiger bread, while the afternoon brings marked-down treats that are still perfectly good. The staff actually know their stuff about what's coming out of the ovens when, which is more than you can say for most supermarket bakeries.
