You'll spot the queue snaking around St Helen's Square long before you see the famous frontage – and yes, it's absolutely worth the wait. Inside, the Art Deco interiors transport you to a more genteel era, all polished wood and gleaming mirrors, where smartly dressed staff glide between tables with tiered cake stands and proper bone china.
The afternoon tea is legendary for good reason: delicate finger sandwiches, warm scones with proper clotted cream, and an array of miniature cakes that would make a Parisian patissier weep. Their Fat Rascals – enormous fruited scones topped with almonds and glacé cherries – are practically a York institution. Yes, you'll pay handsomely (expect £30+ for afternoon tea), but this isn't just a meal, it's theatre.
