House Of The Trembling Madness // Stonegate (The Original)
Medieval pub above a bottle shop where taxidermied animals watch you drink exceptional craft beer in pleasantly chaotic surroundings.
quirkyhistoricintimatecasualbar
You climb the narrow stairs past dangling pheasants and stuffed badgers into what feels like a Victorian naturalist's fever dream. The medieval rooms above this Stonegate bottle shop are crammed with taxidermy, vintage curiosities, and some of the best beer taps in York. It's delightfully bonkers – think more eccentric uncle's attic than polished gastropub.
The beer selection is genuinely outstanding, with rotating taps showcasing Yorkshire breweries alongside Belgian classics and experimental sours. Staff know their stuff without being preachy about it. Yes, the dead animals might put some people off, but that's rather the point. This isn't trying to be everyone's cup of tea, and York's infinitely more interesting for having somewhere this wonderfully odd right in the tourist heart of Stonegate.
