Monk Bar

Monk Bar

Medieval city gate turned atmospheric pub serving proper Yorkshire fare and local ales on historic Monkgate.

You're standing at one of York's four surviving medieval gateways, and yes, you can actually drink inside it. Monk Bar is properly old—we're talking 14th century—and the atmosphere reflects that: exposed stone, low ceilings, and the kind of creaky floorboards that've seen centuries of footfall. It's touristy enough that you'll hear accents from everywhere, but it never feels cynical about what it is. The upstairs rooms feel genuinely intimate, and if you time it right on a quieter afternoon, you can almost forget the crowds outside on Monkgate.
