Capri @ The Vine

You walk into what looks like a standard boozer on Leeds Road, complete with the usual pub carpet and that faintly hopeful atmosphere of a local trying to be more than it is. Then you clock the proper Italian menu and realise something interesting is happening here. The pasta arrives properly al dente, the pizza bases have that satisfying chew, and the portions are generous enough to justify the £15-18 mains. It's an odd setup that works brilliantly – you can nurse a pint while waiting for your carbonara, and the pub setting keeps things refreshingly unpretentious. The staff know their way around both the wine list and the beer taps, which feels uniquely Wakefield in the best possible way.
