You know that feeling when you're expecting absolutely nothing from a leisure centre café and then find yourself genuinely impressed? That's Sun Lane Leisure's café in a nutshell. Tucked inside the council sports complex just off the city centre, this place serves up surprisingly decent grub that puts some of Wakefield's 'proper' cafés to shame. The breakfast rolls are properly generous, the coffee doesn't taste like dishwater, and the staff actually seem to care about what they're serving. It's the kind of place where you pop in after a swim or while the kids are at football practice and end up lingering longer than planned. Nothing fancy, just honest food done well in a spot that could easily get away with serving terrible coffee and sad sandwiches but chooses not to.
